WHAT: The 5th Annual Fathers Day Commemoration and Parade
WHEN: Saturday, June 17, 2006, Fort Stanton Park (18th
& Erie Place SE)
Parade assembles at 9:00 a.m. at the 51 Club (3207 Naylor Rd Temple Hills, MD,
right across the DC/MD) ending at Fort Stanton Park (picnic and activities begin
at 12:00 p.m. at Fort Stanton)
WHY: In recognition of families who have lost loved ones to violence, ROOT,
Inc. and the Calvin Woodland Foundation have collaborated to hold the 5th Annual
Father’s Day Commemoration picnic at Fort Stanton Park. The Commemoration will
kick-off with a parade featuring local youth marching bands and will lead the
community from Club 51 to Fort Stanton Park. The activities include a libation
ceremony, various speakers, live musical music, games, prizes and a number of
fun-filled family activities.
The Calvin Woodland Foundation and ROOT, Inc. have declared a moratorium on violence for District of Columbia this Father’s Day Weekend. This event is dedicated to bringing the community together through continued efforts of deterring violence throughout DC. It also serves to connect community-based and social service agencies with residents of the Metropolitan areas and continue to give encouragement and hope to those families of victims of violent crimes.
ROOT, Inc. is a non-profit organization in the Washington, D.C. area, which advocates against gun violence on behalf of homicide victims and their families. ROOT works to mobilize communities to take a proactive approach in reducing gun violence and other violent crimes. The Calvin Woodland Foundation works within the community to keep the legacy of Calvin Woodland Sr. alive and well “Where there is a child in need may the foundation be there.”
