ROOT Communities in Action National
Movement |
| |
-
To create a national
non-violence coalition
and civil society
movement
-
To build a national
community-based model to
reduce and ultimately
end gun violence, drugs,
gangs, and poverty that
threaten public safety
-
To establish a civil
society movement to
address the root causes
of violence, and to
dramatically reduce and
ultimately end all forms
of violence and abuse in
America
We believe that in order to
get to the root causes of
violence, that all Americans
must have a safe
environment, decent housing,
an excellent education,
universal health care, and a
viable income. To achieve
this we have set out the
following goals:
-
To create the "political
will" in Congress, State
Legislatures, and City
Councils, to
substantively address
gun violence, homicide,
drugs, gangs, crime, and
poverty through
legislation and
community action
-
To create "true"
political power for
communities to
participate in problem
solving, program
development, and the
legislative process,
which is essential to
democracy
-
To create communities
that are economically
viable, self-sustaining,
productive, safe,
healthy and in which
families and children
believe in a future
-
To create the beloved
community that Martin
Luther King dreamed of
in order to transform
America towards a moral
society
-
Legislation: To
generate legislation in
Congress, State
Legislatures and City
Councils, and state
legislatures from the
civil that will address
the root causes of gun
violence, violence in
general, homicide,
drugs, crime, and
poverty
-
Communities'
Perspective: To
generate legislation
that gets to the root
causes of violence and
that accurately reflects
the problems and
solutions of the broader
civil society, in
particular, those
communities impacted by
gun violence
-
Legislative Hearings:
To conduct
Congressional, State
Legislature and City
Council town hall
meetings in local
community schools and
community centers that
publicly examine the
epidemic of gun
violence, and to listen
to successful solutions
that have a proven track
record in reducing gun
violence and violence in
general
-
Citizen
Congressional/Legislative
Hearings: To hold
1000 Citizen
Congressional/Legislative
Hearings on the root
causes of gun violence,
violence and abuse in
general over a two year
period in order to
create awareness and
stimulate concrete
legislative solutions
among elected officials
at all levels of
government
-
GAO Study on Gun
Violence: To have a
GAO study in Congress in
order to accurately
assess the epidemic of
gun violence in America,
how it is impacting
children and families,
and programs that are
successfully working to
reduce gun violence
-
GAO Studies on Public
Safety's of unhealthy
and unsafe communities
and viable proven
solutions: To
commission other GAO
studies in the following
areas as they relate to
unhealthy and unsafe
communities and programs
that are successfully
working to insure public
safety
-
Domestic violence
-
Parental, elderly
and child abuse
(physical, mental,
emotional, economic)
-
Gangs
-
Drugs
-
Homelessness
-
Incarceration and
re-entry
-
Bi-Partisan
Congressional Blue
Ribbon Commission:
To create a permanent
bi-partisan "Blue Ribbon
Commission On Gun
Violence and Public
Safety" in Congress that
will annually issue a
report to Congress on
the epidemic of gun
violence in America, its
root causes, and
successful models and
solutions that have
worked in communities to
stem the tide of gun
violence and create safe
communities.
ROOT Communities In
Action & 110th

ROOT's Communities In
